Mining companies set up little housing ‘projects’, the workers lived there. They had a ‘company store’; the workers got food allotments there. All these ‘services’ were deducted from their pay, of course, which in most cases left little or nothing after the deductions. The houses were mad of stick frame and clapboard, with tarpaper for water proofing.

I see your point. As for why do we put others in that sort of position, I think it is most often because we've been put in that position by someone else before. Its a vicious circle. Sort of like the "pecking order"

I did not miss the point of the story, because how else could the miner and his wife's story relate to dafka's personal issue? Instead I just read something else between the lines. Not the issue of the wife's decision, but the origin of the problem that lays with the mine owner. Instead of providing for another person, he offers a temptation. It is still up to the poor to resist the temptation, for sure. But now, these kids are challenging Dafka to steal the candy, while they could be friends all without bringing another person into temptation. <br>It is not easy to do the "right thing" if you are running out of other solutions. Yes, it is still wrong, but sometimes it is easy to understand how it happens though. Why do we put others in this position?

I think you missed the whole point of the story Richard. The point of the story is that if you're willing to sell yourself (your morals) for others money or approval etc then the price doesn't matter...

We believe that every worker deserves a safe work environment, and every employer deserves to have healthy workers safely on the job without the risk of workplace injury.

A long read, but a lovely story. And there is so much truth in it. The housewife that has to sell herself because the employer did not provide anything for people that injure themselves on the job. Nowadays, laws and insurances are there to protect us from situations like this one, but there are still many places in the world where life is like in your story and an injured employee is left to take care of himself. A very unfair thing if you are talking about high-risk jobs like mining.
