There’s a misconception out there that you can make money byblogging. I would argue that this is not so. The money in blogging comes from connections. In other words, you don’t make money by blogging but by making connections. Those connections might just be between advertisers and consumers, or they might be between you and potential customers. When you view your blog as a way to connect with a tribe, it will change how you write your blog posts. Instead of selling or just writing for the sake of writing, when you write to connect with people, it’s a whole different style. You may find that when you write to connect with people you end up making money. Just be careful that the connections are more important to you, and you’ll find yourself doing just fine in the money department. No connections = no $$. Blog posts don’t equal ROI, but connections and transactions do (but that’s another whole blog post).
What do you do to build better connections? How does this thought change how you approach writing blog posts? Or am I completely wrong about this?

You’re completely right, Doug. Too many people get the misconception that if they start blogging, before you can say “Arianna Huffington,” the advertisers will come pounding on their doors offering to plaster their blogs with banners, or book publishers will ring at all hours offering them seven-figure deals for their life stories. The odds of that happening are about as good as the odds of a chess club champ winning the heart of a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. The more likely scenario, as you mentioned, is that the blog attracts the notice of a business person who likes what they’ve written, and hires the blogger for a small project to start. And you know, in this economy, that’s not such a bad thing.
